The Traveling Yoga Company began with the desire to bring yoga to children and the entire family. As a Registered Nurse working at an elementary school, Kathleen McCarthy knew how important health and well-being is for children on a daily basis. When she graduated from her first 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training (Hatha style)and SEL (social emotional learning) facilitator training through Breathe for Change, she created an after school program for kids called the CrissCross Applesauce Club. She continued her training with 200 more hours (Iyengar style)at a local studio and has earned many different certifications for teaching various types of yoga classes. She is currently in a 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training program. Kathleen has worked as a nurse for over 40 years and in the second half of her life is pursuing her passion for all things yoga.
Some of the classes and events may feature live music with singing bowls, percussion instruments, chimes, and a local talented musician Tommy Mac joining playing guitar. Kathleen has earned her Usui Reiki Master certification and offers reiki sessions at the studio as well as including reiki in some of the classes offered.
As a Yoga teacher, it is important to make a committment to community service. This is called Seva or "yoga of selfless service". We support local non-profit organizations such as Lorraine's Soup Kitchen in Chicopee and The Cancer House of Hope in West Springfield holding classes at these locations as our Seva. Each summer, you can also find us holding classes at River Vally Co-Op in Northampton.
Class Descriptions:
Slow Flow - a flow of poses pausing in each pose to connect to your breath. This is Hatha style yoga. It is a flow of foundational poses with a warm up, peak, cool down, and final relaxation pose. We build up some heat and some poses can be challenging. This is not a beinner's class, but can be adjusted to all levels of experience.
Beginner's - you will learn about yoga from the basics, from what are props and how to use them to the foundational poses in a sequence.
Chair - traditional poses while seated in a chair or using the chair as a prop. This class is for those who may have mobility issues or balance difficulties and can be basic to more challenging.
Yin - deep stretching of the ligaments, tendons, and fascia while on the mat. The poses are held for 3 - 5 minutes and this is a relaxing, slow, and self-reflective type of yoga. It is beginner friendly.
Restorative - this type of yoga is the most relaxing, lying on the mat, with no effort to the body. Poses are held for up to 12 or more minutes with the option to receive reiki while in the pose. I am a Reiki Master and may perform hands-on Reiki if you desire. There may be live music by local musician Tommy Mac during the class and typically a Sound Bath with singing bowls and other instruments during the final relaxation pose. This class length is about 90 minutes.
Sound Bath - the student lies comfortably or sits in a chair while surrounded by the music and vibrations of the crystal singing bowls, percussion instruments, rain stick, ocean drum, chimes, and guitar. This is meditative and deeply relaxing and healing. There is research supporting the many health benefits of music.
Yoga Nidra Meditation - also called Yogic Sleep. It is a deeply restorative guided meditation while you are lying on the mat or sitting in a chair.
Kids Yoga & Art - typically ages 5 - 7 with adult. Yoga poses are introduced while telling a story and acting it out with the poses. Followed by an art class that is customized to the children signed up for the class. It could range from painting, to creating different crafts, and I am open to suggestions.
Adult Art, Various Special Events with visiting guest teachers. I am open to suggestions for classes, days, times, and ideas!

I offer 1 hour Reiki sessions at the studio as well. I am certified as a Reiki Master - I practice hands-on, it is a gentle healing practice that promotes deep relaxation and helps to calm the nervous system. Many people find it reduces stress, restored balance, and supports the body's natural ability to heal. Add ons can be a Sound Bath and aromatherapy.
The most up to date schedule is shared each week via email mainly and then social media - Instagram and Facebook. We also have a Youtube channel offering relaxation techniques, 10 minute Sound Baths, and videos from area musicians who have played live music at the studio.
